For 99c buying this is a no-brainer. Really well put together, as strong or as weak as you need, really well designed boards and pieces which can be mixed and matched. So far, this is the best chess game Ive used on the Mac.

Chess Deluxe is absolutely Excellent Chess program. Highly recommended. I give it 5 stars without hesitation. I purchases a $5 Chess Plus program which in my opinion is not worth the space on my or your hard drive..
Good AI, graphics, and selection of board and pieces etc. Like most chess games needs a good tutorial to teach new players.
1. This chess game is one of the ugliest I know. The choice of board setting (color, pieces) is ridiculously narrow, and pieces are just ugly ugly. Most of the times bishops and pawns look alike. 2. You can’t set the level with an elo scale from, say, 400 to 2600. You have to choose between beginner, advanced player, 2 sec, 5 sec, etc. This is not satisfying at all. 3. It doesn’t read your text pgn files in spite of what is said in the instructions !!!! This is what I get when I try to open a pgn file with this app : "Chess Deluxe cannot open files in the "text" format". Can you believe that? I’m still after a decent pgn viewer on mac … depressing. At the end of the day, it’s just above the Mac Chess app inside with your macbook. Very disappointing. But the good news : it’s just 99c
decent game but it would be nice if one could figure out how to allow the computer to make the first move once in a while. Am I missing something?
It is very good for a buck. Like the built-in Mac Chess it takes forever to move at the "infinite" setting, so on my old MacBook I really havent gotten to check it out at max difficulty as I am too impatient. But at the setting just below that it is very challenging. I do agree that the default appearance is an eyesore, so I switched that immediately to a less busy screen as I find that 3D skins might be pretty but in computer chess they are way to distracting. It is easier to play with a birds eye view, which is how we study chess games in books and online. And as for the complaint that you cant choose black? You can. You flip the board from the Tools Menu, and make the computer play white by selecting Force Move from the Move menu. And Bobs your uncle. This all said, I think that there is better software to be had for free in the tablet and phone world, with Droidfish probably being much better than this.
Well, how do you get this thing to start a new game, change levels… or set design? Offers no menu at all… I have a new iMac, so what is wrong here?!!!…. Please help!
I like it. Im glad that I had downloaded this app.
I think it would be better when you will add all great features that we found on ios app. Please make more update
I played one game once a while ago, and I still am not able to start a new game. Every time I open it to try it again, it is still stuck on checkmate from months ago. I tried closing the app, also updating it, but neither has worked. I have never had this kind of probalem with an app before, and nothing like this has happened with any of my other apps since this one started acting up.
Excellent overall, wide range of AI strength, with beautifully rendered boards. This is now my favorite app when I want to play chess. Shortcomings are few for a first version: Help needs to be updated for Mac port from iOS. No way to resign from a lost position. Program announces checkmate before making its move. Move timer keeps running after mate.
So far so good. Other than the timer not stopping after checkmate this game works well. For 99 cents this is a good bargain. I recommend this game.
I am looking for a chess app for an elderly relative who owns a Mac. I purchased this to try it as one option. For casual play, it could be an excellent choice, but one unnecessary feature will prevent me from giving it to my relative: The game requires that your monitor resolution be 1600x900 or higher. Due to his eye sight, my relative has his machine at 1344x756. The game actually plays fine at 1344x756. Only one or two settings windows are too tall to fit on a screen that is set at 756 pixels high. It is unnecessary that those settings windows be so tall because they actually ask for only a few inputs. With minor tweeks, this app could easily fit on 1344x756 resolution monitors. I encourage the designer to make those changes and open the app up to plenty of elderly or near-sighted players. Additional note added later: The game has annoying feature that periodically asks you to rate the app. Well I have rated it, but it keeps asking. There appears to be no way to turn this off.
The game has no obvious controls. You can start, but not stop. You are better off buying a PC along with the Chess Master application. That works. BY the way, sending a review is a real pain.
the page cannot change and there is no select option. Just played one game and that it is. Im very disappointed with that.
plays the same opening over and over. Adanced mode is not impressive. Maybe ok for beginner? One star at most?
This is an excellent, no frills chess opponent. The controls (Including a wide range of playing strengths) are located in the Preferences Menu, which is found by clicking on the title "Chess Deluxe" in the Menu Bar at the top of the screen. During game play you can make it vary its opening by using keyboard "Command-Z" to back up Blacks second move, then make the Black move of your choice. The app starts playing White, and responds with Whites move #3. At that point you can either continue as Black, or regain White by repeating the same procedure ("Command-Z" to back up Whites move #3) and thus resume playing White. The keyboard "Command-N" starts a new game anytime. If you enjoy playing chess, you dont need anything more. For the price, I dont think a chess player can get a better buy!
Unless I am doing something wrong, this APP does not give you the ability to pick if you which side you want. Very simple error on their part.
I download it but it only works for 1 game…, so $ 0.99 for game is NOT WORTH for sure!
A few one stars???…….all of them over a year old, so I have no idea if the app has been updated or not…..I asume it has……. Tons of board colors and differant playing pieces to pick from……...(if that is important)………skill level from pretty easy to beat to where I have no chance…(I am a novice for sure)…….works like any Mac app with preferences, settings ect..no idea what the others are talking about in their reviews??? Many ways to move pieces. Click on both squares, drag n drop, ect. I have played about 20 games and it works great. Very, very intuitive!! Lets you know if you made a “questionablel" move and you can undo it….lots of stuff.
